After the critical and sales failure of Need For Speed Undercover there were rumors that Electronic Arts was thinking about dumping their long running action-driving game series for good. So it was a bit of a surprise when word came out earlier this year that EA was launching not one but three all new Need For Speed games, two of which would appear for the PC. One of those games is Need For Speed World Online, designed as a free-to-play online game that will launch in Asia first before coming to the US in late 2009. The Need For Speed web site has some more info about the title vis a chat with the game's producer Scott Henshaw. He reveals that the new game will be an open world enviroment that takes elements from the two fictional cities in two previous games; Need For Speed Most Wanted and Need For Speed Carbon. You can also expect to see the pursuit gameplay modes (in other words being chased by "the man") as well as other co-op and team modes.

Hey knucklehead! Yeah you, tough guy! I heard you wanna be the baddest ****** around. Who told me? Oh, just some of the guys, it don't matter. Now, what I'm tellin' ya is that ya gotta get out there and just start killin'. Don't ya ever stop. At least not until everyone else is dead. Ya look like a pretty strong guy, though, so I don't think yer gonna have any problems at all. In fact, tell ya what: ya go out there and do some awesome movie-style ****, and I'll give ya some of these fancy new weapons I got right here. So get out there and unleash the fury. I'll even shout out some hints to ya. A Year to Remember Get 2004 lifetime kills. This one isn't too hard to get in normal play. In short, just play the Scout a lot! You will probably get this achievement faster if you play the scout aggressively. If other words, always be at the front of a rush, ready to mow down anybody who gets in your way with your trusty bat, pistol, or shotgun. Not being the flag carrier helps, as it makes enemies focus on you less and gives you more opportunity to kill those chasing the actual flag carrier.

A few weeks ago, Epic Games announced the winners of the second phase of their Make Something Unreal mod contest, which game recognition and prizes to mod teams that used Unreal Tournament 3. Today the game mod web site Moddb.com announced the winners of their annual Mod of the Year contest which covers the entire PC game mod community.

Today's Mac Monday is a two-fer. We're taking a look at Brainpipe, by Shrapnel Games, and Ranch Rush, by Big Fish Games. These two games could not be more different from each other, and thus, make the perfect two to base a two-fer around. Essentially, Brainpipe is a flying journey through your brain's convolutions, rendered into trippy, hallucinogenic colors. Ranch Rush is a farm management simulator. Both games are fairly addictive, and both are inexpensively priced. What's it all about, Alfie? Read on to discover the hideous secret! Brainpipe The conceit behind Brainpipe is that you're navigating the convolutions of your own mind, attempting to achieve various mental states. To do this, you're represented by a white, circular, wireframe reticle. Control of the reticle is handled by mouse movement. It's difficult to tell if your movement through this swiftly winding tunnel is on rails or not; the movement is so fast it hardly matters.

A few weeks ago, Emergent Game Technologies, the company that makes the Gamebryo game graphics engine, announced that it had secured $12.5 million in new funding and was going to introduce a new product soon. Today the company unveiled that product: Gamebryo LightSpeed. The new game development tech is so named because Emergent claims it will cut development time, and therefore costs, in making games for the PC and consoles.
